MULE DAYS 2014 - 1

MULE DAYS 1 (May 20)

Off a little later than desired, 0525, Tuesday, May 20th. The result was more traffic from the 91 North to I-10. Once past the I-10 the traffic lightened and the rest of the drive went smoothly. Actually the traffic was quite light all the way to Bishop. We stopped  briefly at out motel of choice, Big Pine Motel, to check in and get our keys. Then it was on to Bishop which is only 15 miles North.

The weather had been cool and overcast to start but then turned cold and quite windy. From Lone Pine North one could not see the tops of the Sierras or the White Mountains. There were a few showers, and later a layer of snow was seen on the peaks. We were warmly welcomed but then had to be off to watch our friend Amy compete in about six classes with her mule, Wild Bill. She won two firsts and two seconds, and then ventured out into some new classes for her and her mule. We took a break from being spectators to get a much welcomed hot chocolate. We also toured the souvenir shop and I came away with a new Mule Days jacket to replace the one I have been wearing off and on for the past 20 years! This new one was very nice given the cold weather conditions today.

Dinner tonight was at AMIGOS Restaurant where we always enjoy a great meal. The special today was baby lobster enchiladas. They were delicious. It may have helped that we had not really had anything to eat since about 10:00 when we finished our second sweet pretzel and a cup of coffee.

Time now to relax a bit before a shower and bed. Tomorrow’s weather forecast is a little better than today, but there is still a good chance of rain showers and blustery wind.

MULE DAYS 2 (MAY 22)

Today was another weather day here in Bishop. We had overcast most of the day with occasional breaks of sunshine. The mountains never lost there topping of clouds. In the afternoon we had a couple of good rain showers. Luckily for us, we were near or in the barn area and were able to quickly hunker down under the extended roof or go into our tack room. There was a noticeable drop in the temperature with each passing shower.

Our friend Amy is doing most of the competing this year. She has done very well. Today she came home with two Blue ribbons and a couple of others. Tina competed also today in Western Dressage and finished 8th in the class. She was happy with the results as she has spent very little time on Ima this past Spring. DawnMarie is only showing in halter classes as she has been busy working clients’ animals. She brought a couple of babies to hopefully sell. She has a couple of young mules at home in Santa Rosa that she will be starting next year.

Once again we returned to Amigos for dinner. It really is an excellent Mexican Restaurant with some great variety of taste in their menu. After dinner we returned to Big Pine to our Motel. This early return allowed for some time to review the few pictures that I took with my camera, write in my b/log, and do a little reading before bed.

A MORNING WITH OSPREY

Went off on Thursday morning to photograph young ospreys in a nest at Robb Field here in San Diego. We had a clear sunny morning, a start to a very hot day in San Diego County. There are three young birds and then a Mom seen in these pictures. They fledged yesterday! Will have to go back next year to see what happens as this is a popular nest site and has been used for a number of years.

As most of you know San Diego County has been battling a number of fires this past week. It was a very hot week, but the weather has finally cooled down and the winds have subsided. The fire crews are getting the upper hand on the fires, and all residents who had been evacuated from their homes have returned. The fires are still burning but a couple have been fully contained, and some of the smaller fires are out. Almost all of this occurred in North County. We will have to be ever vigilant this summer due to the extreme dry conditions throughout the state and the southwest.

CALIFORNIA BEACH

We were off to the Coast after breakfast. Along the way we revisited the poppy fields in the Antelope Valley.

We drove on to Camarillo, California for some surf and to allow our Easterners a chance to put their feet into the Pacific. Some opted to just put their tripod feet into the Pacific.

Let me know what you think.

Hope you have enjoyed this adventure and it's variety. The Raven will be flying again soon. So please check back occasionally.

DEATH VALLEY - II

Off this morning at 0445 to get to Zabriske Point for sunrise. We made it with a little time to spare and photographed with probably 75 other people at the point. Since I was there last they have put up some fencing to keep people from being reckless, and probably stopping some erosion. The view of the eroded canyon walls and the vista here is wonderful.

After breakfast at Furnace Creek Resort we headed back to Panamint Springs with several stops for wildflower photography. A short nap in the middle of the day. We first had to return to Beatty, NV for refueling and then went to explore Artist’s Palette, which is a canyon with a variety of colored rocks. We did a short hike into Golden Canyon, before returning to the Sand Dunes for sunset. The sunset was subtle but always a fun experience. There was a bit of a hike out to the taller dune.

It had been a long and hot day and several people felt the heat as a result. One of the party I believe suffered a little from hyponatremia, which can occur from drinking water only, and not replacing electrolytes. There was also the beginning of a stomach bug developing with a couple of people. Dinner was at the Stove Pipe Wells saloon.

A few of us went out the following morning for sunrise on the dunes. Some of the foot prints had been obscured due to some good winds that had
developed last night. The wind had not been an issue last night as it was
at our backs so the sand was not blowing into us or our gear. Again the sunrise was subtle, but the dunes were lovely in their cleaner state.
