BOLSA CHICA NATURE PRESERVE - DECEMBER 2013

Went off with a couple of other like minded photographers to photograph shore birds at Bolsa Chica  Nature Preserve. It is located in the Huntington Beach area of Southern California. It is known for a wide variety of bird species as it is along a major migration route for shore birds. It is located about a two hour drive North of San Diego City and South of Los Angeles.

We did not need to be there early in the day so that we could travel after the morning commute. I met Bill, Lew, and Rich in Del Mar and off we went. We arrived about high noon, but due to the season the light was not harsh. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the East side of the Preserve stopping now and then to photograph great egrets, marbled godwit, long-billed curlews, willets, shovelers, great blue heron, least terns, reddish egrets, a merganser, a white faced ibis, as an end of the day special: a brown pelican in sunset light. We had an early dinner at a very good Italian Restaurant not far from the beach on Warner Avenue before heading home. Due to the early sunset we were on the Southern end of the evening commute on I-405 as we headed home.

I think that we were all home by 2000. The editing process started the next day. I started with 530 pictures and now have it down to 59! Here are 15 for you to enjoy.

  1. Looks like a great day birding. Especially like the flying shots.
