CALIFORNIA COAST - JANUARY 2017 - 7

MONDAY, 9 JANUARY

We had a short photo session at the beach once again this morning.

As we had all our gear packed, we then headed directly to the San Francisco airport. We parted ways there and headed for our separate homes in Iowa, Illinois, Virginia, New York, and San Diego. Before checking my bag I packed away some of my outer wear, and tripod.

I had time to dally so I enjoyed a little breakfast, and then settled down with my book to await boarding the plane for home. The flight went smoothly and was on time. I treated my airport shuttle driver to a crab sandwich from Pt. Loma Seafood for dinner.

It was good to get home. This was a challenging trip, but I had a good time enjoying some old haunts, and photographing some wonderful coast.

SUNDAY, 8 January

Today was the worst for weather - strong blustery winds, and rain. Due to the weather we enjoyed breakfast at our lodging. Then we started a drive South through 17 Mile Drive to see and photograph the iconic Lone Cypress Tree. I almost needed to add bricks to my pockets as the wind was blowing at about 28 mph while were trying to photograph.

Luckily we could stand in a protected area.

We continued the drive past Pebble Beach Club House and Golf Course

and exited near Carmel. We did not visit Carmel, but continued South to the Pfeiffer Big Sur area and a view of McWay Falls.

McWAY FALLS

This Falls is 80 feet in height and falls directly on to the Beach. The flow of the falls on this day was most impressive. We estimate the wind here was maxing out at about 40 mph!!

We continued our drive South and turned around at Lucia, a small hamlet to the South. After turning around for our trip back to Monterey we stopped at Nepenthe for a light lunch and a warming drink. The Nepenthe has been there since the mid-60’s and is known for its deliciously prepared meals, and its fantastic view of the Big Sur Coast on a clear day. My family visited it often while living in Monterey. Regrettably there was no view today due to the weather. We all enjoyed the nice fire in the fireplace while having a bowl of chowder, and hot tea, coffee, or chocolate. During the drive North we noticed a couple of small mud slides which the highway maintenance crews were busy clearing.

Along the drive we saw and photographed some natural tree sculptures -

Back in Monterey we relaxed a bit before going out to a nearby Chinese restaurant for our last repast together. It was a great feed, and fun to be sitting as a group around a round table.

CALIFORNIA COAST JANUARY 2O17 - 5

SATURDAY, 7 JANUARY

We continued to have overcast skies with occasional rain showers. This did not deter us as we headed back to Pacific Grove for a morning shoot. Once again the subject was long exposures of the surf around the near by rock formations. This time I liked more of what I captured and enjoyed the effect.

After the shoot we found the Café Trieste for breakfast where we enjoyed the warmth of the setting, good food, and coffee.

We were then off to Moss Landing, which is located North of Monterey. We went there to find the otters that frequent the slough there. We were quite successful. There was a good sized group that were swimming along and if you were nimble enough to get up on the rock wall they came quite close. Regrettably I missed that opportunity, but did get some good photos of otters swimming and hauling out on the nearby beach.

On the way back to Monterey I asked Mark if we could swing my old home which was only a block and a half off of Del Monte Ave. The house has been remodeled into two stories, the big oak tree which was in the front yard is long gone, and the back yard has been filled with a large garage/workshop – no play area or fruit trees any more.
MONTEREY HOME REMODELED
The afternoon outing was cancelled due to high winds and rain. As a result we had some needed down time at the Motel before heading to the Wharf for dinner. Tonight we ate at Abalonetti’s where I enjoyed cioppino, a specialty of theirs.

CALIFORNIA COAST JANUARY 2017 - 4

FRIDAY, 6 JANUARY

This morning we were delayed in getting off so we could not make it to Drake’s Beach in time for sunrise. As we drove the Pt. Reyes –Petaluma Road, Mark kept an eye out on the sky. He found a turn off that took us to a part of Nicasio Reservoir and rolling farm land to capture the fast approaching  sunrise and morning light. We rapidly set  up off the road for sunrise.

Then we photographed the fog rolling around the reservoir as well as the frost covered plants.

We then returned to the Motel in Petaluma for breakfast and packing up our gear for our move to Monterey. The Quality Inn did a very good job with their Breakfast Bar including the fixings for  breakfast burrito.

On the way to Monterey we again stopped at the Marin Headlands for those who had not been there before. It was mid-day so the light was not optimal. Once over the Golden Gate Bridge we stopped at Sports Basement so members of the group could return rented and/or bought items in preparation for the aborted trip  to Yosemite. It was also in San Francisco that my roommate, Patricia, left the trip to return home.
Once we had checked into our Motel, we were off to Pacific Grove and the coastline below Asilomar.

STORM EVENING
The weather was doing it’s thing, and so it was overcast and grey most of the afternoon. We focused on shooting small images of the surf using slow shutter speeds.

CALIFORNIA COAST JANUARY 2017 -3

  THURSDAY, 5 JANUARY

Today we were off for sunrise at Drake’s Beach in Pt. Reyes National Seashore. It is located about 30 miles North of San Francisco and has lovely long beach views, cliffs, tule elk, and elephant seals, and much more.

We headed first to the beach to get sunrise color on the cliffs, and beach, and then the beautiful curving shoreline.

Very close to where we initially set up was a large elephant seal lounging on the beach. He was not at all interested in us. Got a few shots here but the light was not great. Tried several different approaches to the landscapes.

After breakfast at the Station House Café in Pt. Reyes Station we went out once again with cameras in hand. We found some lovely rolling hills with coast live oaks, as well as some picturesque farms and vineyards.

We then headed for the area of the beach where there are a number of elephant seals. We walked to the overlook and saw some frolicking off shore. They were quite a distance away but I got a couple of storytelling photos.

Soon it was time to head back to the beach for Sunset light. Along the way we came across the small herd of Tule Elk we had seen early in the morning. After the initial shooting I changed lenses to my Canon 100-400 with the 1.4 teleconverter. The images were much improved and the enlarged image size was notable.

At the beach I was disappointed with the light. We basically were in the same locale as the morning, but the sun gods were not favorable for photography at least from my perspective. I did make the most of it though.
