PHOTOGRAPHING THE OREGON COAST - JUNE 9, 2017

JUNE 9TH – BANDON, OR

Today’s breakfast was at the Minute Café in Bandon. Afterwards we headed North to the Charleston Coos Bay areas in search of photo opportunities. One of our first stops was to photograph Cape Arago Lighthouse located on the South side of the entrance to Coos Bay. We also had the opportunity to see and photograph from quite a distance, sea lions hauled out on a small outcropping as well as a large colony  beached in a small cove located in Simpson Reef.

We then traveled to Shore Acres State Park and Botanical Gardens. A number of us got hooked with the ocean views and capturing the surf action and never made it to the Botantical Garden.

A Burst of Surf

One of objects was to photograph the surf with a very slow shutter speed. As the sun was out and it was mid-day, I was not able to get the needed really slow shutter speed. I ended up with some interesting effects, most of which I really did not like. Some of the surf was taken at 1/20th to 1/30th of a second. These created an interesting sense of the wave action. I also liked the faster shutter speeds which stopped the wave action completely. The walk along the cliff showed some interesting formations which seemed out of place.

On our way back to Bandon we stopped for a short time at the Charleston Shipyard to explore for some more photo fun tomorrow when we would have more time.

Dinner tonight was pizza which we enjoyed at one of our beach houses. It was very relaxing to chat outside of a restaurant setting.
We went off to sunset but no sooner did we get to the beach and start setting up, a rain squall arrived and we headed back to our vehicles, and on home.
